Mr Singh's Assembly (10 images)

On Thursday 13th October, Mr Singh visited us to talk to us about what it means to be a Sikh helped by Parum. He explained that Sikhs believe in one God, they believe in giving to others and often give 10% of their income to charity, children often give their time as they don't have an income. If you visit a Gurdwara (Sikh place of worship) there will often be a food kitchen where anyone (non Sikhs as well) can have something to eat. He told us that Sikhs do not cut their hair and this is way men (and ladies) wear a distaar (turban) or ladies wear a chunni. We enjoyed watching Mr Boyd and the children wearing these.

Years 1 through to 4 visited St Mary's Church and created a whole school collage telling the story (this is on display in the Church). Each class then did various activities which helped us thinking about Harvest and the food which is provided. Reception and Year 1 made fruit kebabs, Year 2 made soup and apple crumble while Year 3 and 4 made Harvest Sheaves from bread complete with a little mouse.

Sadly the British weather didn't allow us to view the eclipse first hand but everyone went out into the playground and we spent the first part of our day learning about eclipses. We had a visit from Excellent Eve and had a Mad Science show which was full of fun and excitement. In the afternoon each class carried out their own investigations. The children were fully engaged in the day and it was lovely to get outside for some of our work in the afternoon sunshine.

RE Day - Friday 30th January 2015 (49 images)

The whole school took part in our RE day on Friday. The day was designed to celebrate the four main monotheistic faiths studied throughout school. Each classroom represented a faith and children learnt about a festival associated with each. Children worked in their Owl families and it was fantastic to see the older children supporting the younger children. In Pluto (Sikhism) children made vegetable curry and rangoli patterns. In Jupiter (Christianity) we learnt about Lent and tasted pancakes and decorated leaves and thought about what we would like to be forgiven for. Saturn (Islam) we thought about the Festival of Eid and decorated prayer mats, made crescent and moon mobiles and used paints to create mendhi patterns. Venus (Judaism) we studied the Festival of Purim, made hammentaschen and graggas (noisemakers). Mars (Christianity) looked at Easter and joy of the resurrection. Children worked together to create Easter gardens and made crosses from hamma beads.
